Whenever I do school visits (and I can do one for your school if you want!), I always mention my cat Alfredo. He’s practically become my assistant since I’ve had him, always trying to help me with my work. And I thought he should get the spotlight on this page.
Doug and I adopted him from Bide-a-Wee in New York City. We thought we were going to get a kitten, but it was in January, right after Christmas and lots of kittens are given as holiday gifts. But when they asked if we wanted to meet any of the older cats, we said yes and met this sweetheart. His name before he became ours was Kai, which we thought was very cool. But we always wanted to call the cat Alfredo—especially when we thought we might get a tiny little Alfredo-sauce-colored kitten.
Alfredo was 2 when we met him and is an orange Tabby. But we decided he should still have that name. He’s got a pretty big personality so the name really suits him.
We aren’t totally sure of his first two years, but it seems that he was with a family for some time and then either put out on the street or dropped off at a shelter. When we met him, he was in a cage on the floor of a big room with lots of other cats in cages. We met a lot of them that day but when they introduced us to Alfredo and saw how he reacted to us, they let him come out of his cage and hang out with us on the floor. And we knew right then: He was meant to be our little guy.
Alfredo loves chicken first. Then he loves Doug and me. Then he loves his Mouseys that he bats around the apartment. He loves scratching the furniture, even though we don’t. He loves chicken. He loves snuggle time on the couch. And he really loves to play Roly-Poly, which is basically him flopping around on his back while we scratch his belly. He likes kisses on his nose. Many, many smooches. Oh, and chicken, did I say he loves chicken?
